Whether you've just landed on Sumba or are travelling through Indonesia: for three days you trade the pool for campfires, savanna and ocean. With experienced guides you learn what survival really takes – and see the island the way hardly any traveller does.
In a world that could get into serious trouble over the next few years, the ones who will be alright are the ones who still have real survival skills – the kind the people of Sumba carry every single day. Time to learn them.
No experience needed. Just curiosity and a taste for adventure.
Ride our Sumba horses.
Sumba horses are small, sure-footed and born on this island – they know every trail before you do. On day one they carry you out of civilisation, across the savanna and along the ridges until only the horizon is left, and they'll greet you like old friends on the way back.
Gentle for beginners, honest with experts. No arena, no saddle polish – just you, the horse and the trail ahead.
Out on the water with our boat.
Day two belongs to the sea. We push off in our own boat and fish the way the people of Sumba have always fished – rods, hand lines and a good reading of the tide. Whatever comes aboard goes straight onto the coals that evening.
Calm mornings, glassy water and the reef flat at low tide – the best fishing ground on the coast, only a few minutes from camp.
The itinerary
Day 1
Into the Wild
Arrival · Horses · First Camp
Pickup at the airport in a proper 4x4 jeep. The drive runs inland, to the place where the horses are waiting. From there you ride out to Camp 1. You learn to make fire, prepare a chicken for dinner and cook with simple means. First night under the stars – no electricity, no familiar comfort.

Day 2
Find Your Way
Navigation · Hiking · Fishing
You get a map and have to find your own way to the coast. At the beach you build your second camp and try to catch your own dinner. No catch? Then there's simply no self-caught dinner – an emergency ration and drinking water stay available.

The Extraction
Wilderness · Final Mission · Helicopter

Honest words
This trip is not for people who…
✕are scared of insects, animals or sleeping out in the open
✕are allergic to horses
✕have any allergy that can become life-threatening
✕have serious health issues and need daily medicine (heart problems, lung issues, etc.)
Everyone else needs to be sporty and in healthy condition – three days in the wild ask something of your body.
And vegetarians? This is survival, not a health camp.
It's not the skills. It's this list.
Could you handle three days?
Anyone can learn to make fire. What really tests people are the small things. Tick everything you could honestly live with for three days – then see where you stand.
